Super-featherweight prospect ABDUL Khan, who is based in Bolton, will return to the ring tonight in Accra, Ghana, as part of the “Battle of the Beasts” undercard, which will be shown live on DAZN. Abdul, a relative of Amir Khan, the 2004 Olympic silver medallist and former unified WBA/IBF super-lightweight world champion, has high goals for himself in the sport. In the run-up to this fight, he told Boxing News, “I’ve been training really hard in the six months since my last fight, waiting for my next fight date to be confirmed.” “I’m really thankful for this fantastic opportunity on such a large platform like DAZN and to be fighting in Africa—I can’t wait to see what it’s like out in Ghana. I need activity at this stage of my career.” In order to improve my skills and go to the next level, I’ve been working out hard and staying in shape with my coach, Alex Matvienko. Khan has competed in four professional fights outside of the UK, including one in Dubai, so he is accustomed to traveling far from home and completing the task at hand. Given that he has a solid reputation from his numerous overseas fights, the opportunity to fight in Ghana is greatly appreciated. “I consider myself really fortunate to be able to compete in other nations, like the United Arab Emirates and Ghana, where it’s rare to see major boxing events held or broadcast on major streaming services like DAZN. I feel like I’ve earned these opportunities because I work so hard; if I were simply playing about, I wouldn’t feel like I deserved them. However, my colleagues and I are aware of the amount of work I do every day. “My coach Alex frequently expresses his admiration for the amount of effort I put into this every day, claiming that it’s my greatest quality—my dedication to the game. “When I initially started boxing, he watched me mature from a young boy to a man. When I was younger, I briefly left his gym to train at another one, where I learned new techniques and talents. However, I eventually returned here as a more experienced fighter, so I believe everything ultimately worked out as it should have. Although Khan has competed in lightweight and super-lightweight weight classes, he has fought most of his professional fights at super-featherweight. After talking with his coach, he now feels that super-featherweight should be the weight he campaigns at going forward. Alex understands what’s ideal for me in terms of fighting weight because he’s known me since I was eight years old. I’ve competed at super-lightweight and lightweight previously, as you are aware, but I think my strongest suit is super feather, and Alex agrees. I believe that often boxing fans are unaware of how crucial the fighter-coach relationship is. It’s important to have faith in your coach and corner crew to help you navigate challenging situations in the ring. When those times arrive, I know that my coach and cornermen will be able to provide me with the guidance I need to win the battle. “I just want to say that fighting in Ghana and doing my bit on the card is an honor. I’m hoping that this will result in more cards throughout Africa, not just in Ghana. I am aware that this year, cards are being worn in Pakistan. “I hope that boxing will spread to all of these nations that we don’t typically think of as host countries for major boxing events. I want to contribute to the global representation of the sport, which is long overdue.
