After activating his £62.5 million release clause, Manchester United confirmed the signing of Wolves’ Brazilian sensation Matheus Cunha, completing their first summer transfer window acquisition.
Cunha is anticipated to sign a five-year contract with the Old Trafford team, with the possibility of a one-year extension.
“Manchester United has reached agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Matheus Cunha,” a statement from the club stated.
“Everyone at Manchester United looks forward to welcoming Matheus to Old Trafford.”
The 26-year-old spent the weekend in Manchester finalizing his relocation, which is contingent upon registering and obtaining a visa.
With 18 goals throughout all competitions this season, Cunha—who has 13 appearances for Brazil—won the player of the year title from Wolves.
The Brazilian joined Wolves from Atletico Madrid in January 2023 and ended his career with 33 goals in 92 games in all competitions.
To guarantee he would be manager Ruben Amorim’s first acquisition of the summer transfer window, United triggered the release clause in Cunha’s Wolves contract.
Amorim’s team finished in 15th place in the Premier League, their lowest result since 1973–74, and lost the Europa League final against Tottenham to top off a miserable season.
